Extreme Water-skiing, Like Behind a Bass Boat?

By Terry Price

There are many things to consider when you are buying or selling a boat. Boating is a wonderful hobby and can bring many happy, thrill-filled days, but, they might also be unhappy ones if you end up purchasing the wrong boat. If you are a bass fisherman, you know how important a good bass boat is. If you are looking for a good jon boat, purchasing one in the winter is a good idea, but the selection can sometimes be limited. Use the Internet, as it is a fantastic resource for all types of boats. Whether it is a bass boat, inflatable dinghy, inflatable zodiac or even a bow rider.

Pickup a boat trader magazine and scan through it until you find a boat suitable for your purposes. Remember that taking the word of the seller that the motor is sound is not good enough. If you're purchasing a fishing boat, a motor of eight to 20 hp is a good rule of thumb. When starting any outboard, two or three good cranks on the rope should be enough to fire the motor. If you find a boat that you really want, ask the owner if you can bring it into a dealer and have them verify the mechanical soundness of the motor.

It is important to decide what you are purchasing a boat for, fishing, rowing, paddling, power boating, or even a personal watercraft. If you are looking for a good stable craft, there is nothing like rigid inflatable boats for stability and buoyancy. Most of these types of craft will also take a small motor with the exception of kayaks and small inflatable boats. When purchasing a boat, remember that as soon as spring arrives many people will be looking for boats, and they will be harder to find and will be more expensive. Doing your homework and finding one now makes it a great time to purchase your boat.

Tips On watercraft

Marinas are the top of the range as far as moorings are concerned. Moorings in a marina tend to provide deep water throughout the day and therefore a jetty or pontoon is provided so that you can walk to your boat without getting wet. These are known as Pontoon Moorings. They will also provide most of the facilities that you require whilst using your boat. These may include showers and toilets, chandlery, parking, cafe and even a clubhouse. The security provided by a marina will be good and in many cases will include electronic access gates and CCTV camaras.

Once you have decided on buying a boat you will need to think about where you are going to store it. If it is not possible to store at home then you will need to moor your vessel. There are several types of moorings available and these include a marina/harbour, boatyard, or a swinging mooring.

If the Jetsons owned a yacht, it would probably look a lot like the Maltese Falcon. The prized possession of Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tom Perkins, the Maltese Falcon is like a sailing computer, equipped with fiber-optic networks, microprocessors and touch screens that have converted the brain and muscle of sailing into a computerized control panel. Now, the only manpower required to hoist and lower its 26,000 square feet of sails is a touch of a button. Likewise, the football-field-sized yacht completed in spring of 2006 is the most expensive and technologically advanced of its kind today. With a price tag hovering around $130 million, the Maltese Falcon navigates more like a video game than a 1,367-ton boat. But Perkins isn't stopping there. He's working on a sports submarine to house on the Maltese Falcon in case he ever wants to play with some whales or manatees deep in the ocean. Think of it as his version of a jet ski.

40' - 45' Bluewater Cruiser?!

Fri, 24 Oct 2008 19:10:48 +0200
I'm looking to purchase my first sailboat and I am in need of some guidance. I was leaning towards a steel or aluminum hull but most do not have a swim step and walk through transom. It sounds kind of odd but the is a top criteria for me. Three reasons: it is easier to land big fish, it is easiers to board from a tender, and I have a dog who loves the water and if she jumps I need to get her back aboard somehow. Do you know of any steel hulled sloop or cutter rigs that have a walk through transom and a swim step?! I am looking at the 40'-45' range.

Should I Buy a New or Used Boat?

By Andrew McNaught

There are positives and negatives to buying both new
and used boats, much in the same way as cars. You
should look at new boats first, even though you can
find hundreds of used boats.

New boats

By purchasing a new boat, you will know everything
about the history of the boat and the motor. You
also have a warranty if something on the boat goes
wrong, which can save you money if you have a
problem. You also don't have to worry about having
to restore your boat, like you do with some used
boats, which means that you can get into the water
immediately.

In financing a new boat, you will get a much better
interest rate than you would if you chose a used
boat. You will also get a much better idea of
what kind of boat that you want for your family
when you go to a new boat showroom. Just as it
does when you buy a car, a new boat will depreciate
the most during the first season of use, so keep
that in mind.

Used boats

If you have a tight budget or are unsure about what
you are going to do with the boat, then you may want
to choose a used boat. It is a good idea to at least
look at new boats first, even if you are planning on
buying a used boat, so that you can determine what
kind of boat is best for your family.

If you want to look at the different boats that are
available, you may want to consider going to a
boat show. You can look at the boats at the show and
then narrow down your list to the type of used boat
that you prefer.

You want to make sure that you get a marine survey for
any used boat that you are considering purchasing
whether you are buying a boat online, from the
newspaper, or from a local boat dealership. It may
be expensive, but it will be worth the money spent in
the long run.

In some cases, used boats may have mechanical problems
or structural defects that are hard to detect. A
marine survey works much in the same way as a home
inspection works. The surveyor will go over every
part of the boat to see if there are any problems
with any of the operating systems or the structure
of the boat.

Depending upon the results of the survey, you can
stop the deal or use the results to get a lower price
if there are problems that need to be attended to.
Getting a marine survey is the smart decision if you
are buying a used boat. It can save you money, time,
and heartache, which will make the price of the survey
well worth it.

Summary:

There are positives and negatives to buying both new
and used boats, much in the same way as cars. You
should look at new boats first, even though you can
find hundreds of used boats.

Personal water crafts present safety concerns in terms of their ability to steer. Since steering is achieved from aiming the nozzle of the pump jet, there is no rudder involved, which means the craft cannot be steered in an emergency breakdown situation. Also, steering is significantly reduced when the throttle is not being applied; this leads to dangerous situations because it is against one's instinct in an emergency to accelerate. However, turning is not effective without doing so. After market products are available to help with this problem, including different types of rudder steering systems such as Cobra Jet Steering. In 2001 Sea-doo added the O.P.A.S. (Off-Power Assisted Steering) system which uses rudders installed on the rear sides of the PWC to assist in steering.

Navigation software - what is good for use on a sailing yacht?

Mon, 13 Aug 2007 19:45:17 +0200
Hi, just a quick question - I've been looking for navigation software and found there is lots of it for sailing yachts. I came across a program called Software on Board that runs C Maps. So, I was just wondering if anyone has this and can tell me what it's like. Can anyone tell me what type of GPS antenna would be best (an internal or an external)? My boat is aluminium and I'm not sure how the signal would go through aluminium, and, is the accuracy of these units as good as each other?

Some Things You Should Know About The Jet Ski

By Brian Johansson

A Jet ski is a personal watercraft vehicle that can accomodate 1 - 4 persons depending on the model. They were first developed by Yamaha as a one person model, and their popularity has caused other companies to join the booming market for similar watercrafts. The original design had the rider standing or crouching on a small platform towards the rear of the craft. The rider could vary his or her position with a steering column the could move vertically up and down. This aided in variable standing positions as well as letting the rider move with wave action as necessary.

The most notable innovation that came with the Jet Ski design was the jet propulsion system that it incorporated. The Jet Ski was powered bringing water into a tube and pushing out of the rear, thus createing the 'jet' effect. This is done by a impeller inside the tube. The tube can also be moved side to side horizontally for steering purposes. This power system is ideal for small watercrafts because it is safe and fast. There is no external propeller or rudder for passengers to worry about. The jet drive is also a very quick means of accelleration for light watercrafts.

Since the first Jet Ski gained huge popularity, the other designs have almost completely replaced the original design. All personal watercrafts still use the same jet propulsion, but the body design is very different. Newer designs are larger and they use a motorcycle style seat that is much more comfortable for cruising and it easily fits more than one passenger. depending on the length of the seat, you can fit 1 - 4 passengers comfortably. The first design of this watercraft was called the WaveRunner and it was made for 2 persons. Modern designs average room for 3 persons because the Jet Ski has now become an alternative to a boat because of its versatility and low price tag.

Hints About seadoo supercharged

Some of the more advanced inflatable boats, like Zodiac's Fastroller, feature a special High-Pressure inflatable air floor. Made of two layers of fabric, connected by thousands of tiny "drop stitches", this floor can be inflated to a high pressure, creating a floor with rigidity equal to sheet of plywood a fraction of the weight. Best of all, they can be completely deflated and stowed in only minutes without removing any parts. This high pressure air floor is softer on knees and backsides too.

Various maintenance should be carried out on your boat on a regular basis, whether you own a dinghy, RIB or yacht. Some of this maintenance is to keep the boat looking good, but some is essential for the proper working of your vessel. Don't forget about regular maintenance checks as you could be building up for major problems.

Ciguatera, A Danger For Yacht Crews Sailing In The Tropics

Sun, 16 Sep 2007 12:09:24 +0200
When catching dinner, how concerned are cruisers and sailors about catching fish which carry the Ciguatera toxin? I only know what amounts to 'folklore'. In Australian waters many anglers avoid eating large fish which are known to dwell amid coral reefs. The parrot fish (beautiful fillets!!) is known to be particularly prone to Ciguatera. I understand that fish caught in deep water, or away from coral, do not carry Ciguatera. Is this correct?
